How to read competitor job postings as competitive intelligence

Every job posting is a strategic announcement. Companies spend months deciding what to hire for — and those decisions reflect their roadmap, their pain points, and their next competitive moves. Unlike pricing changes or press releases, job postings are rarely gamed for external consumption. They're meant for candidates. That makes them one of the most authentic competitive signals available.

The velocity signal: how fast are they hiring?

Before analyzing individual postings, look at the overall hiring rate. A competitor going from 5 to 25 openings in a quarter is in aggressive growth mode — expect product launches, geographic expansion, and pricing pressure. A sudden freeze after a big round often signals internal problems: missed revenue targets, strategic pivot, or post-acquisition integration issues. Hiring velocity is a leading indicator of competitive intensity.

Reading function mix for strategic direction

Which functions a competitor is hiring for tells you more than the titles. Heavy engineering hiring signals product investment. Sales hiring signals go-to-market push. Customer success hiring (at scale) often means churn is a problem. A sudden wave of data science hiring means they're building personalization or pricing optimization. Track the ratio of engineering to GTM hires over time — when a PLG company starts hiring sales leaders, the market is maturing.

Reading job descriptions for roadmap signals

Job descriptions are surprisingly candid about product direction. "Experience with real-time recommendation systems" means they're building personalization. "Familiarity with HIPAA compliance" signals healthcare expansion. "Experience scaling to 10M+ users" means they're preparing for a volume growth push. Look specifically at the tech stack requirements, integration experience requested, and domain expertise required — these reflect the product they're building, not the one they have.

Setting up automated job monitoring

Manual job board checks don't scale. With 5+ competitors and monthly check-ins, you'll always be a quarter behind. An automated setup scrapes LinkedIn Jobs, Greenhouse, Lever, Workable, and Indeed every week, then classifies new postings by function and flags high-signal roles (VP-level, technical specialties, unusual locations). IntelBrief's jobs scraper tracks all of these per account and surfaces notable hires in your weekly digest, alongside pricing changes, product launches, and press coverage.
